Are You Ready to Laugh?
Ex-Homeschoolers Club Issue #7
Good Morning Ex-Homies!
This week has been a whirlwind. Can you believe we are already in May? From irl meetups, to zoom calls, to setting goals for the next few months, this week flew by.
I’m still working through some of the burnout, but everyday it’s feeling a little better.
I don’t have much more to say than that so, keep scrolling to see some of my fave things of the week.
This Week on the Podcast…
I sat down with stand-up comedian and ex-homeschooler Jeremy Alder to talk about his journey from Christian fundamentalism in rural Texas to releasing his first comedy album, Almost a Grown Man. We laughed a lot, got real about religious trauma, and reflected on how humor can help us make sense of the weirdness we grew up with.
In this episode, we covered:
✔️ Homeschooling in the '80s – Jeremy’s early education with Highlights magazine and Bible memorization
✔️ Growing up isolated – What it was like to be one of the only homeschoolers in South Texas
✔️ Faith to philosophy – How his love of Christian rock led to questioning everything
✔️ Stand-up as healing – Why comedy became Jeremy’s outlet for processing his past
If you’ve ever felt like the odd one out or wondered how to turn your past into punchlines, this one’s for you!
If you haven’t enjoyed this week episode, you can find it here:
Food for Thought…
I’ve been thinking through some podcast topic ideas and want your opinion on something that’s rattling around up there.
What do we think about a series exploring the origins of the some of our favorite (or not so favorite) curriculums?
This sparked from learning about the history of Classical Conversations and honestly being a little SHOCKED by some things I did not know.
If that’s something that sounds interesting to you, shoot me an email ([email protected]) letting me know what curriculums you’d want to deep dive on.
What I’m Reading…
I’m pretty proud of myself this week, I’m actually starting to make some headway on reading Boundaries. I’ll admit, it’s not been the easiest read. I’m finding the amount of biblical references somewhat of a turn off, but nonetheless I’m pushing forward.
So here’s been my main takeaway from this week’s reading.
Mine, my, and me are not swear words.
The author presents this as part of the rapprochement stage of learning boundaries. This development stage of boundary building is suppose to help us master the following things
The ability to be emotionally attached to others, yet without giving up a sense of self and one’s freedom to be apart.
The ability to say appropriate nos to others without fear of loss of love.
The ability to take appropriate nos from others without withdrawing emotionally
I’m still letting this sink in, but it’s got me excited to continue reading.
If you’ve got any suggestions for books about setting boundaries, I’d love to hear them.
What I’m Watching…
Well, in honor of my guest this week, I’ve been watching his special and Jeremy’s definitely got some funny jokes in there. His whole bit about not needing a purity ring because he’s got purity pants, made me crack up.
I hope you give it a watch and maybe laugh at a few of the jokes.
Until Next Time…
Keep being your weirdo self.
Peace & Love
