It's Been A Minute

Ex-Homeschoolers Club Issue #11

Hey there!

I know I’ve been a little radio silent as of late; work has kinda consumed my world and I needed to take some time and sort things out.

But thankfully, things are sorted and new episodes have been recorded. Exciting things are happening for the Ex-Homeschoolers Club

On the last few episodes…

I sat down with RB to unpack a powerful and emotional story of growing up homeschooled in a strict religious environment. From gender-based educational inequality to culture shock in college and questioning the religion he was raised in, RB shares how he went from rigid expectations to building a life rooted in healing and community.

In this episode, we covered:

  • Homeschooling in fear vs. freedom – The difference between Pennsylvania’s oversight and Kansas’ wild-west approach

  • Gender roles and education – How patriarchy shaped RB’s path and left his sisters behind

  • Post-homeschool culture shock – The reality check of college, work, and real-world relationships

  • Deconstruction & trauma recovery – Finding therapy, joy, and new purpose beyond religion

  • Adult friendships & making space – How RB found healing through building Bastrop Coworking and choosing connection over isolation

Last week on the podcast, I sat down with Charlie Monroe—a licensed therapist and former youth pastor—to unpack the emotional and spiritual aftermath of growing up homeschooled in a large, conservative Christian family. From feeling isolated in a rural home to being expelled from ministry after questioning church dogma, Charlie opens up about his journey through faith deconstruction, emotional healing, and what he’s learned as a therapist working with homeschool families today.

In this episode, we covered:

  • Isolation & extroversion – What it’s like to be the only extrovert in a quiet, rural homeschool household

  • Religious rigidity – How rigorous Christian curriculum shaped Charlie’s worldview

  • Transitioning to college – The social and academic shocks of stepping into the real world

  • Deconstruction & leaving ministry – Losing a career and finding clarity

  • Therapist perspective – The warning signs and patterns Charlie now sees in homeschool families

What I’m reading…

Our fellow ex-homie Jenève Dubé just dropped their new book “Mixed-up Metaphors” that is a great addition to any coffee table. If you enjoy a good laugh, this is a fantastic book to have lying around. Grab your copy here

I’d appreciate your support…

One of my goals for 2025 was to actually take a swing at creating some YouTube content about podcasting and the tools I use to create content for my clients.

I’d love it if you’d consider my channel a view or maybe even a subscribe!

Until Next Time…

Thanks for the support!

Peace & Love
