Take the day off...you deserve it.

Ex-Homeschoolers Club Issue #8

Happy Saturday Friends!

I decided to delay the newsletter by a day because I was honestly just enjoying my Friday. I’m currently in Florida and spent the day lounging by the pool, sipping a cocktail, and soaking in the sun.

It was a great remainder to sometimes just take the day and do something you enjoy.

That’s all I’ve got to say.

Take a break. Doctors order (I’m not a real doc so please don’t sue if you take a break and your life gets worse).

On This Weeks Podcast…

I sat down with Mia Brooks, a longtime family friend, talented musician, and fellow ex-homeschooler. Mia opened up about how homeschooling shaped her, how it contributed to early burnout, and how being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult reframed her entire childhood. We talked about reclaiming creativity, making indie music as Babi Manatee, and learning to embrace neurodivergence instead of masking it.

In this episode, we covered:

  • Homeschool burnout – Why self-paced education can backfire for neurodivergent kids

  • College at 14 – Mia's early jump into higher education and what it exposed about structure

  • ADHD diagnosis in adulthood – How finally naming it helped her make sense of emotional intensity

  • Creativity as healing – Turning burnout into songwriting, performance, and self-expression

  • Shame and self-compassion – Reframing the "overachiever" mindset and finding grace in recovery

What I’m reading

Ok…ok…ok! So I’ve been reading Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend, and today I decided to not finish it. This book has been incredibly hard for me to read and I kept pushing because it’s such a highly recommended book.

So why was it so hard for me to read?

Well, the authors only reference in the book so far has been the bible. Now I have no problem if you want to reference the bible in your work but where is the additional research? You guys are writing about something that has plenty of research to back up your claims, so where is it?

So, I’m shifting gears and starting a new book. I haven’t fully decided what it’s gonna be so if you have any recommendations, shoot me an email at [email protected].

What music I’m listening to

Since Mia was on the show this week, I have to give her music a shoutout. It’s been on replay at my house for the last few weeks.

So do yourself a favor and go stream her album this weekend.

Psst…my favorite song on the album is “you”. You’re welcome.

What podcast I’m listening to

My latest podcast binge has been The Severance Podcast. Normally, I don’t love podcasts that are companions to TV shows but if you’ve watched the show, you know that some things need further explanation. That’s where the podcast comes in. Ben Stiller and Adam Scott host, and they are dropping all the behind the scenes information you could ever want.

Until Next Time…

Thanks for the support!

Peace & Love
